Where does the Journalist's Day come from

Journalist's Day is an event on the Salvadoran calendar that is celebrated every July 31 . This date aims to recognize, honor and praise the work of those people who with great effort and sacrifice work to keep the country informed.

How was the Journalist's Day born?

The Day of the Journalist was instituted on July 31 because on this day of the year 1824 the first Salvadoran newspaper was published, whose name was " Semanario Político Mercantil de San Salvador " and that was possible thanks to the support of the priest José Matías Delgado and the contribution of the faithful making the acquisition of a printing press in Guatemala viable.

It could be said that this was the birth of journalism in El Salvador and that the first journalist in our country was the priest Miguel José Castro, editor of the Semanario Político Mercantil and defender of the Independence of El Salvador.

Since then, Salvadoran journalism has gone through different stages and difficult moments, however it has managed to stay on its feet and survive the criticisms and attacks that have tried to discredit journalism in our country.

In this way, the Day of the Journalist was instituted by the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador on June 16, 1969 through decree number 380 by which it is declared that every July 31 of each year a special day dedicated to journalism be celebrated. From El Salvador.
